SVCHost.exe running at high CPU 2013 2014

Strange support call today, one of our customers is still running Windows XP, all the PCs where running 100% CPU and the PC’s were unusable.

The ‘svchost.exe’ in task manager was running at 100% CPU, so we killed this process and all seemed to run as normal on the PC, but after about 10 minutes the process came back again running at 100% CPU again.

One of 2 things we thought, Virus or Windows Updates
We updated to the latest version of the AV software and ran a full deep scan, it found nothing.

We then used Sysinternal’s ProcessExp to see what files the svchost.exe was running, it was ‘wuaueng.dll’ which means Windows Updates.

But the Windows Updates were turned off a year ago in Control Panel, so we right clicked My Computer > Manage > disabled the ‘Automatic Updates’ services – rebooted.

We applied to all other 57 PC’s, we then monitored for the day everything is running smooth again.
